Nail Header
Nail Header
These nail headers are based off of 18th century nail header designs, and do their job well. The tall dome makes it easier to get in the steeply-angled hammer blows needed to finish a traditional faceted nail head. Period common nails often had shanks with a rectangular cross-section, so for making period common nails in the 6d to 10d size range the 1/8”x3/16” hole size is recommended, though the 3/16” square hole is a good solid choice for those sizes as well, and I do not recommend a larger header for average-sized nails. The recommended stock size for use with those headers would be 1/4”. The 1/8” hole size is for very small nails, while the 1/4” hole size would be best for heavy nails between 4” and 6” long, and will require the use of 5/16” or 3/8” stock. Body of nail header is mild steel, dome is hardened and tempered high-carbon steel. Overall length is about 9”. Headers are made to order- please allow up to 60 days turnaround time.
